Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon
JOHOR BARU: We need water to live, but too much of it can cause destructive flooding or, worse, a tsunami.
Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said this was the same with the nationalist spirit, which if practised moderately could help to develop the country and its people.
Taken to the extreme, the result would be a rift in racial unity and hurt feelings, he added.
“Water, like fire, must be handled with care. Of course, we have firemen for damage control if there is a fire, but wouldn’t it be better if we work hard to avoid the fire in the first place?” said Koh at the Johor Gerakan delegates meeting yesterday.
He ticked off Umno Bukit Bendera chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail for refusing to apologise over his allegedly racist remarks while campaigning in the Permatang Pauh by-election.
He said it was the norm for human beings to err and there was nothing wrong in apologising for a mistake.
Koh said even Umno deputy president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had apologised on behalf of Umno over the issue.
